Jang Jun
Designer, editor and critic, Jang Jun works in urban research and experimental study, exploring the interrelationship between design and the urban dynamic. He founded Underline Office in late 2003 and was the founding editor-in-chief of Urban China Magazine (2005-2010), a multi-dimensional medium that integrates deep-level problems with popular expression, orthodox official discourse with vivid folk narration.

His works have been presented in exhibitions such as ”Get It Louder” (2005/2007), Guangdong Triennale (2005), Shenzhen Biennale (2005/2007/2011), China Contemporary in Rotterdam (2006), and Kassel Documenta (2007). He was the curator of the international exhibition “Street Belongs to … All of Us!” in China in 2008. He has been invited to lecture at domestic and international universities such as Sun Yat-Sen University, Beijing University, CUHK, Harvard University, UCL, Tokyo University, Seoul University, Princeton University, Columbia University and IIT. Since 2009, his Urban China Magazine has been exhibited at three museums in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, the first Chinese magazine to be exhibited overseas in a travelling solo exhibition.

Born in Hubei in 1974, Jang was awarded a Bachelor’s degree at Tongji University in Shanghai and Master’s degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Jang is now an associate professor at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, was a project director at Strelka School of Architecture, Design and Media in Moscow (2010-2011), and visiting fellow at the ESRC Centre on Migration Policy and Society of Oxford University (2011-2012).

Every night, before going to sleep, I hose down the inside of my brain, so that I sleep like a baby. This method wasn’t prescribed to me by a strange doctor; I invented it myself when I was young as a formula for mental hygiene.

I sincerely believe that happiness is the greatest gift we can give ourselves when faced with our mortal destiny. I choose photography, one of the most intense ways to look at and experience daily life. Taking photographs is also a great way to interact with people and for me, as someone as sociable as he is optimistic, this interaction with living creatures is something as necessary as breathing; but it must be a positive interaction. And here is where it is possible to see the aspects of life that fascinate me most, those which we reserve solely for searching for that fragile goal called happiness: physical and mental spaces of leisure understood as life-affirming realms, far removed from the drudgery of wage slave effort and sacrifice.

I think my way of looking has gone from surprise, irony or celebration to a contented acceptance of the manifestations of others, less and less judging, less and less reciprocal, and more and more mature.

Tomoko Sawada
Tomoko Sawada was born in Kobe, Japan. She works and lives in New York and Kobe.
Sawada studied photography at the Seain University of Art and Design, where she is currently a guest professor.
She uses photography to explore the relationship between people's inner lives and their outer image. Her works borrow compositional devices from familiar photographic formats such as school portraits, weddings and fashion photography. She restages these in a satirical mode so as to lay bare their stereotypes and assumptions. Predominantly casting herself in the role of model, she has built an extraordinary cast of characters that present a humorous and incisive portrait of Japanese society.
Sawada's exhibitions and prizes include: 2012, “Factory Direct: Pittsburgh”, Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, USA; “Creating with Light The Manipulated Photograph”, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Tokyo; “1st Collection Gallery Exhibition 2012-2013”, The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; “In Character: Artists’ Role Play in Photography and Video”, Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Boston, USA; “Nostalgia, East Asia Contemporary Art Exhibition”, MOCA Shanghai, Shanghai, China.
In 2008, she won the Higashikawa prize, photo-eye “Best Books of 2006”; 2004, 29th Kimura Ihei Memorial Photography Award, The Twentieth Annual ICP Infinity etc...

Andrea Stultiens
Born in Roermond in the Netherlands, Stultiens tries to divide her time between the Netherlands (Rotterdam) and Uganda (Kampala). She studied photography at the Utrecht School of the Arts (1995-1998) and received her MFA from Post-St Joost in Breda in 2001, as well as an MA in Photographic Studies from Leiden University in 2012.

Stultiens' work deals with representing and understanding cultural differences with the help of photographs. She makes mostly long-term, mostly self-started documentary projects for presentation online or in book form. Her interest in photographs held in personal and institutional archives led to her setting up History In Progress Uganda, a platform for gathering photo collections, in and about Uganda, that digitises the images in order to make them available to a wide audience online and in exhibitions.

In exhibitions and books made by Stultiens the (changing) materiality of the photographic image plays an important role. She uses different printing methods to highlight the medium that is being used to show a piece of the world.

Stultiens teaches at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and at the Academy Minerva in Groningen, the Netherlands.
